Guardians of Nature

Zendegi – Male Guardian Of Nature
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

Within the rich expanse of Zendegi’s perceptions and beliefs, one is most prominent: Despite no recollection of a life prior to his current one, he is convinced that his kind’s broad prowess is the reward of a metamorphosis that all dragons can undergo. While he has never witnessed another dragon’s transition into what he calls ‘Guardianship’ – becoming a Guardian of Nature – he is deeply convinced that enough spiritual guidance can prompt an ascent of any of his fellow dragons. Zendegi himself struggles to bring that very enlightenment to the world, investing almost all resources at his disposal into letting other dragons transform. That there seem to be no fruits of his labour has never given him cause to question his conviction; instead, he tirelessly pursues his unattainable goal.

  • Accept: Lovely idea :) -H
  • Accept: Lovely! Tiny word choice suggestion: “ascent for any of” Just suggestion. :) -lw
  • Accept: Nice! ~D

Zendegi is what happens after you let me Summon a Guardian Of Nature right after I finish a book. ‘Zendegi’, allegedly (fittingly!) meaning ‘Life’ in Farsi (I wouldn’t know; I have to take other people’s word on this! XD), is also the name of a book of Greg Egan. It’s a far cry from his best work, but it’s inspiring nonetheless, and the title is undisputably dropdead gorgeous. ;)

Godshatter – Female Guardian Of Nature
Accepted sometime before 22.04.2014.

Godshatter considers herself to be a crippled oracle, the severed voice and avatar of a true deity. Even with no objectively discernible deficit of perception, she finds herself occasionally abruptly disoriented in the world around her – explaining her discomposure as a feeling of having been stunted, stripped of senses she cannot even begin to describe. Her skull is full of disconnected wisdom, cryptic even to her. Occasionally, she’ll despair at her lack of understanding of her own actions and advice, deeply concerned that the recipe may be incomplete, like a building without foundation – but so far, her deeds and advice have always been valuable to others.
Godshatter herself is unconvinced she’s more than a soulless, fragmental library of a transcendental being, an outlook that’s rendered her pathologically introverted, fed only further by her certainty that some day, guided by all that she doesn’t comprehend, she’ll make a terrible and irreversible mistake.

  • Accept: I do like reading your descriptions. :)
  • Accept: I know it’s like “god shatter” but I keep reading it as “gods hatter”. XD ~D
  • Reject:
  • Accept: interesting :) -H
  • Accept:

  • Reject: Too long, cant see whole thing

This is an homage to the Zones of Thought universe by Vernor Vinge. Godshatter is a term for what happens to people’s minds when a being from the Transcend leaves them with high-level information. (In A Fire Upon The Deep, this happens to the character Pham Nuwen; so I was tempted to influence this GoN male as well, but I think it’s enough of an homage as it is.)

Godshatter won the April 2014 Description Of The Month contest for the category Best Overall!

Neglecteds

Ks’szh Morchaint – Female Tinselfail Neglected
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

Ks’szh Morchaint is a bitter, arrogant dragon, believing herself to be nothing short of royalty despite her crippled state. To her reasoning, not only is her tattered kind a rare sight, but most are orphans on paper, whereas she can still glance back onto documented family lineage, leading a mere four steps to Arboriel Morchaint. On most nights, within the confines of her dreams, she surpasses Arboriel, laying claim to the vast territory she’s convinced her oldest recorded Tinsel ancestor must possess, as well as the legions of followers she dreams her to have. Drifting in and out of sleep, her loneliness drives her to silent tears – but she dares not reach out to others, paralysed by the misguided fear that the bond of friendship might convey too much submission for the role that she sees herself in.

  • Accept: Nice :) -H
  • Accept: Aww, poor Neglected! She’s right to be proud of her lineage though – and her species *is very jealous* I wish I had a Neglected… ~ Draco
  • Accept: Fantastic! ~D

Ks’szh Morchaint was my first Neglected. As with Davinath, I was pretty sure I would never get another Neglected. I thought it was the awesomest thing that Ks’szh (aside from having a great, hissy code befitting a Neglected) had a lineage rather than being drearily lonely as a caveborn. And then of course I had to corrupt that.

Poisoned Milk Cognatio – Female Gold-Guardian Arrowhead Neglected
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

Against all tales shared with her on the contrary, Poisoned Milk Cognatio believes herself to be an attempted hybrid gone terribly wrong. She reasons that if her kind were truly the result of neglect alone, there would surely be many more of them in the world. Instead, with her splintered, rattling voice, she speaks of a sinister spirit that haunts the healthy, taking control of their bodies in probing, patient sequence, twisting the offspring with a dark magic intended to eventually bring forth an immortal, perfect creature – a vessel for it to inhabit as that it may dominate the physical world. All who try to dissuade her from this notion find themselves at the receiving end of violent rejection, the crippled dragon throwing a weak but intimidating tantrum, a tempest of claws and teeth, driving them away. Her attitude has left her desperate and lonely, paranoid of the world around her, plagued by nightmares of her own construction.

  • Accept: Nice :) -H
  • Accept: Nicely written. Kind of poetic. -?
  • Accept: Very well written. It seems that Neglecteds tend to have the most beautiful, sickening, and intricate but wonderfully written descriptions. ~Cata
  • Accept: This is so sad. Poor ND. Great descrip! -Hawk
  • Accept: I love it! ~D
  • Accept: Oh wow… I like. This is new -O

Another description that might give you an insight into my psyche, again a little toned down from what’s really dancing around my mind. Poisoned Milk Cognatio is my second Neglected dragon, and I “traded” for her – though I consider that trade to have been something of an alibi, since I gave up a few neat-lineaged commons to get it (WzzxO, 1amAA and 8aHK3), which means that I feel infinitely in the trader’s debt.

Venomous Blood – Male Shimmerfail Neglected
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

Venomous Blood has a gift. It’s an unlikely gift that appears superficially unremarkable: He is gifted with a smooth, graceful gait, better befitting a metallic dragon than anything as crippled as he is. Fueled by a deep jealousy for his fitter kin, this serpentine grace is something he’s learnt to couple with a malicious patience, collecting his scarce energy to lash out in violent outbursts. Convinced he has nothing to lose, he’s reckless in battle, fashioning himself into an objectively worthy opponent, making a name for himself – even establishing a territory of his own. The sheer venom in his attitude and his deceptively purposeful air are enough to startle or outright terrify those less unhinged and he’s learnt to wield intimidation like a tool, abusing those dragons that are cowed into submission, scratching, biting and restraining whatever has the misfortune of coming too close – such as his unfortunate ‘mate’ Mauncauld, who’s thin wings he’s shredded and keeps prisoner.

  • Accept: OK :) -H
  • Accept: Great! *biting, and ~D
  • Abstain: whose thin wings (not who’s – who’s = who is) —-

Whoops, managed to miss the “whose” thing, so resubmitted.

This… is definitely toned down, since the mental image in my mind is chiefly encoded in that last sentence fragment. Yes, Mauncauld is male. No, this Neglected dragon doesn’t care, he happened to be around, he’s not picky, he takes whatever he can dominate into submission. This is another gifted Neglected, given to me by M (abbreviated to protect the not-so-innocent) and thoroughly cherished as another beautifully lineaged creature of misery! <3

Valcen – Male CB Neglected
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

Unusually, Valcen’s crippled state is a curse, intended as punishment for his hubris. A respected and revered part of a powerful clan of dragons of exceptional magical prowess in his previous incarnation, Valcen’s immortality suffered an unfortunate encounter with the unstoppable force of statistical probability: He made a mistake. Unfortunately, consequences of mistakes are often in direct proportion to the power behind them, and this particular metaphorical elastic-band-unintentionally-launched-into-someone’s-eye had grave consequences indeed – Valcen accidentally obliterated his homeworld… along with most of his clan. After his unusual exile through reincarnation, first emotionally transitioning from numb shock to violent self-loathing, Valcen spent a few hundred years mulling over what happened, only to finally reach the desperate, bitter conclusion that it could have happened to anyone – and in his solitude impotently, feverishly dreams of redemption.

  • Accept: Nice Description ~brair
  • Accept: Interesting. :) ~D
  • Accept: This is great!
  • Abstain: If you state this as fact it’s overpowered imo – maybe add that it’s his belief /a rumour -H

After talking with herk it turned out she’d (understandably!) mistook ‘homeworld’ to mean a planet, which wasn’t my intention; so I resubmitted with a minor word tweak:

  • Accept: Better – the most simple solutions are often the most elegant :) -H
  • Accept: Awesome! ~D

The Neglected Dragon Valcen is a generous homage to the Threadwielder Valcen from my kraiaKy universe. The Neglected itself I traded for a CB silver that I caught and the first Neglected that I acquired by ‘proper trade’. It’s also my only CB Neglected, and of all of my Neglected dragons, it seems only fitting that someone as ostracised as Valcen would be without a family.

Threadwoven – Unknown-gendered Neglected
Accepted sometime before 23.01.2014.

Denied the power of flight, weak and tattered wings incapable of even lifting a malnourished form such as its own, Threadwoven’s poured all of its stubborn focus into learning to climb, ascending trees and steep cliffs recklessly, catching itself in a haphazard glide from the worst falls. Those trees most scarred by Threadwoven’s ascents the dragon considers its territory, clung to the branches like a malevolent hybrid of monkey and feline, hissing its warnings to passers-by…. and occasionally tearing those who would dare to come to close from the skies with a coiled leap and the grasp of shredding claws – as, in its deep envy of the power of flight, Threadwoven loves nothing more than find an excuse to render others equally incapable of it.

  • Accept: Nice :) -H
  • Accept: Good! ~D
  • Accept:

Threadwoven is the an Unknown-gendered Neglected I traded for using a CB metallic (a CB gold, to be exact). He’s got an epic double-shimmer lineage, but unfortunately I wasn’t creative enough to figure out something relating to that. Threadwoven’s name was originally intended to be a lead-up for a voodoo-like story, but I didn’t manage to get that to work, either. XD

Galactive – Unknown-gendered Neglected
Accepted sometime before 13.02.2015.

Galactive is obsessed with stars. Rendered incapable of any reasonable physical hobby, Galactive quickly discovered the night sky for verself – along with perhaps an overdose of creativity and imagination. Where others see specks of light scattered across the firmament, Galactive is deeply convinced their arrangement is meaningful, information encoded into distances and angles and luminosity, speaking truths about the universe yet to be discovered and carrying the banter of true gods across aeons. Ve spends most of ver time trying to decode the messages ve believes to be there, though ve keeps ver true enthusiasm about the project to verself, downplaying its importance in conversations with others, trivialising it and lacing a dismissive humour through ver narrative that ve later despises verself for.

  • Accept: Cool! ~G
  • Accept: “trivializing” :)
Oh, you silly Americans and your love of the letter z. <3
  • Accept: Nice :) -H

Another Neglected that waited far too long for a description, Galactive was the last Neglected I traded for (as an IOU for a CB gold). Ve took a long time to hit my scroll, but ve completed my set.

The pronoun choice felt like the least awkward for ver particular narrative. I’m usually a they person when it comes to genderless pronouns, but that didn’t want to flow here, nor did it, so I gave it a try. I don’t know if that’ll bother some reviewers. We’ll find out!

It took me far too long to write a description for this dragon, unfortunately, given a huge lull in description accepting by the moderators in 2014, which sapped my desire to write any more. :( It was – finally – written on the 2nd of August.

Dystorsion – Female CB Neglected, vampire-bitten by (RoW3)
Accepted sometime before 23.01.2014.

Dystorsion is the product of a vampire bite gone wrong. The toxin left her truly crippled rather than fully transformed, with a circulatory system perpetually on the brink of its own collapse. Allergic to sunlight moreso than her vampiric would-be kin, Dystorsion prowls around at night, looking for the deepest caves to rest in come dawn. Despite her distortion – or perhaps because of it – she has a talent for magic, unfortunately paired with little drive to improve it, as she’s quickly exhausted even just by research alone. Listlessly she pages through what she can find, lingering on records of healing magic that is known to have no power to help her, yearning passively to find a way to alter it so it may.

  • Accept:

  • Accept: Very nice :) -H
  • Abstain: more so is two words, methinks
Looking it up, “more so” seems to be more proper, with “moreso” colloquial, but I think I’ll keep it.

This is one of the dragons that lost its pending status and ended up with Description Status: No Description in 2015. I may have missed a comment or two from the old set.

I got this Neglected after a discussion came up in the Suggestions forum that Neglected vampires lose their ‘bitten by’ link, which is a shame. It was proposed to change it – and I was one of the people lamenting the lack of it, and how much I’d always dreamed of the constellation. I was PMed out of nowhere and gifted this baby soon after! And then it gendered female, which is my favourite Neglected sprite. The only thing that could have possibly made that more awesome is if the baby had a lineage. XD

It took me far too long to write a description for this dragon, unfortunately, given a huge lull in description accepting by the moderators in 2014, which sapped my desire to write any more. :( It was – finally – written on the 2nd of August.

Arsanis

Zaertlichkeit – CB Arsani
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

Zaertlichkeit is the affectionate platonic companion of Zuneigung. While they share no ancestry that they’re aware of, that doesn’t stop Zaertlichkeit from introducing Zuneigung as her sister. The two dragons are occasionally mistaken as mates by some observers, especially as their sleeping habits often see them knotted into each other, owing to their obsession with each other’s hugs. That such nights are less restful than others given the uncomfortable position never quite seems to bother either dragon.

  • Accept: As long as you don’t add Zungenkuss or Zoelibat it could be either way, mates or no mates :D H
  • Accept: Nice! -lw
  • Accept: *wishes that she knew enough German Z-words to be as awesome as Herk* ~ Draco
  • Accept: Nice Description ~brair
  • Accept: Adorable! ~D
  • Accept: Great! -

I find Arsanis dropdead gorgeous – and I needed an excuse to write terrible descriptions, so I had to have some fluffy and cute ones to offset what was inevitably to come. (I… have something of a reputation as a roleplayer and gamemaster.)

Zuneigung – CB Arsani
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

While Zuneigung has no true familial relation to Zaertlichkeit, she would quote her as a sister in a heartbeat. The two are practically inseparable, to the point where the occasional observer might find it difficult to believe that their relationship is entirely platonic. While sleeping, the two can be seen as a tangle of Arsani limbs, caught in an awkward hug, not quite willing to sacrifice each others’ affection in favour of a more comfortable position for slumber.

  • Accept: I can’t spot the difference – still nice :) -H I try to think of more apprpriate Z-names, but the only thing springing to mind are Zahnseide and Zellteilung – not very fitting ;)
  • Accept: Nice!
  • Accept: Cute. :) ~D

See Zaertlichkeit’s blurb for the history of this description. :)

Balacrea – 2G Arsani
Accepted sometime before 16.03.2014.

Balacrea is disconcerting degrees of obsessed with a functioning community even for an Arsani dragon. Guided by a deep desire for everything to run smoothly and interact peacefully, she believes it’s important to raise dragons to focus on one particular job – any deviation from this norm will see her quite distressed, trying desperately to convince the dragon in question to keep his attention on his tasks. Recreational activities do exist in her supposed utopia, but they’re just as strictly regulated. A designated artist, she thinks, would be much better for social cohesion than allowing warriors, gatherers, builders or hunters to split their focus onto art.
She’s built up a small group of followers – a cult that doesn’t shy away from hypnosis to keep its members properly focussed. Strictly speaking, no one in that group is unhappy with their state, with the prolonged states of hyperfocus only consensually applied… but most nearby clans find the movement deeply unsettling.

  • Abstain: The first sentence seems like it could be worded better. My suggestion: “Balacrea is disconcertingly obsessed with having a functioning community”, etc.

While I don’t think it’s something that has to be fixed in any way, I did really like that suggestion, so I changed it. :)

‘focussed’ is the UK variant, so I didn’t react to this.
  • Accept:

Like Godshatter and Tomas Nau below, this is another homage to the Zones of Thought universe by Vernor Vinge (her description was written after Godshatter’s, though) – in particular, to the Emergents in A Deepness In The Sky, a society that’s given me beautiful nightmares for many days ever since Focus was revealed to me. ‘Balacrea’ is the name of their homeworld.

With that said, Balacrea and her little cult is a little nicer. The Emergents don’t bother with consent.

Note: The mods turned ‘focussed’ into ‘focused’ for some reason. I haven’t adjusted the above description to match it.

Jaqueramaphan – 2G Arsani
Accepted sometime before 13.02.2015.

Jaqueramaphan bubbles with enthusiasm. She’s deeply fascinated by a wide range of subjects and loves nothing more than to discuss her ideas with others. She’s not one to descend into narcissistic monologues, however, just as eager to listen to exotic anecdotes or inventions others can recite tales about, seeking inspiration from a variety of sources. Due to her habit of keeping a note of everything she comes across – scattered about as much as her thoughts as that may be – she’s earnt the nickname ‘Scriber’.

CB metallics

Davinath – Male CB Silver
First written approved description.

Davinath is one of the order of Davir Kaea, a type of dragon – alongside the Davir Sria – endowed with unusually potent magic at cost of their physical strength. What makes him Kaean rather than Srian is that he has chosen the path of chaos for himself, though this does not manifest as one might expect given human prejudice, as he’s far removed from evil intent. Instead, he and his quasi-religious brethren are champions of the disorder that gives rise to life, and have a respectful symbiosis with their Srian kin.

My first CB silver, caught just in time to grow up on my birthday in 2012, is the only CB silver that I caught myself that’s stayed on my scroll. The other three CB silvers (Shahrivrath, Chandarmaneth and Kotanechiku) were all gifts – from L, D and l respectively (yes, those are abbreviations; no, I will not tell you who you can bother for CB metallics *laughs*). My ability to catch CB silvers only came later.

Karyorrhexis – Male CB Gold
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

The scars Karyorrhexis bears are often misattributed to his warrior lifestyle, brutal tank that he can be and associated personality of a reckless paladin that he nurtures – but the story of cause and effect is, in truth, reversed. Rather than be slain as was true of many of his kin, for many years he found himself in captivity, bound and deliberately crippled, pitiful shadow of all he could be. His hide was methodically harvested by his captors, regenerated by a White dragon who was forced to heed an instinct he had no rational desire to use given the horrors it furthered. But just as circumstance had led Karyorrhexis into that torturous fate, chance led him back out, his weak rage against his captors still enough to break bones and end lives. His involuntary companion from those days died as a misplaced hostage, holding no sway on the furious Gold – something he regrets to this day. The scars are solely from the last wounds inflicted on him, those that were not artificially healed.

  • Accept: Nice :) -H
  • Abstain: misattributed is not a word.
  • Accept: Lovely writing! *crippled, a pitiful ~D

In a way, this is the first description I was ever serious about writing – and it shows the sort of fiction I tend to write, I think. For a while I was very convinced it would get a lot of rejects and end up binned by the moderators for being extremely brutal (cautiously worded or not), but neither ever happened. As a bit of history, this is the only CB gold I’ve ever managed to catch myself so far, and he haunted my sleep the night after I did. The other three CB golds (Moshirechiku, Karkadanna and Jeneth) were, respectively, gifted to me (by l (abbreviated to protect the innocent)), traded for (CB silver + two pairs of CB bleeding moon hatchlings —> 3G shimmerscale —> CB gold) and traded for (2 x CB silver).

Karyorrhexis won the October 2013 Description Of The Month contest for the category Best Overall!

Shahrivrath – Male CB Silver
Accepted sometime before 22.04.2014.

Shahrivrath does not take ‘no’ for an answer. Boastful of and entirely convinced of his own generosity, he’s unnervingly authoritarian toward anyone he deems worthy of his attention – and he’s unfortunately very egalitarian when it comes to picking his unwitting victims. If the objects of his platonic affection and mild obsession don’t watch out, he’ll be quick to shuffle them toward the nearest potent magic user to be ‘healed’ of some imagined affliction. In Shahrivrath’s mind, no one can help the imperfections they were born with – but that hardly means that they shouldn’t be corrected after the fact by those capable of it.

  • Accept: Nice -

  • Accept: Good! :) ~D

It only took a year, but my second CB silver, Shahrivrath finally has a description. :) Again, I tried to distil the essence of the character Shahrivrath from the Avishraa Thuban continuity into this description… and I think I managed to capture what makes his personality so unique quite well, without having to give him the godmode powers.

Chandarmaneth – Female CB Silver
Accepted sometime before 22.04.2014.

Chandarmaneth is unusually hostile for a Silver dragon. While her aggression never manifests in ways beyond what many observers might consider passive – hissing when backed into a corner, scratching at those who get closer still, occasionally going as far as to bite – it’s more than enough for people to give her the wide berth. Even so, the subtleties of her posture, seen from afar, speak of a creature that must have suffered badly in the past, now eaten up by mistrust and fear, never coming to close to opening up to anyone to explain what has her so spooked, instead using her solitude as a shield that she refuses to as much as admit to.

  • Accept:

I wasn’t entirely sure how to make an homage to my Chandarmaneth character from the Avishraa universe, so I focussed on her hidden insecurities and exaggerated them. The resulting personality is shyer than Chandarmaneth, but the aggression has overlap, so I’m pleased enough with the result.

Kotanechiku – Female CB Silver
Accepted sometime before 22.04.2014.

Nicknamed ‘the Silver Demon’, Kotanechiku considers herself Moshirechiku’s eternal soulmate. The two have refined their respective magic abilities to astounding degree, rivalling the capabilities of an average Magi, perhaps even coming close to the most famous of that kin… but only ever in tandem. Their most potent magic is dangerous for its invisibility. Others might see them blink out of existence as if they’d teleported themselves – but it is time itself that they bend to their will, sometimes halting it completely for precariously arranged moments of subjective perception as they make their escape. These days, the two dragons share a heartbeat and are often seen resting against each other, observant and peaceful unless disturbed. One might assume them wise for all they have no doubt witnessed, and perhaps one might be right – but no one approaches the two, all too often eerily frozen like statues as they are, silently watching the world erode.

  • Accept: *to an astounding ~D
Optional grammar alteration that I’m not a fan of, so I left it as is.
  • Accept:
  • Accept:

Kotanechiku’s description is an homage to Nechku (Kotanechiku) from Okami. In the game, the two Demons are malevolent and referred to as male, but I’ve been Nechku on the internet a while (and enjoyed the company of a lady called Lechku for a while, as well), and have come to associate the pair as female… but no less dangerous.

Again, the moderators changed my description to match Dimar’s suggestion. I haven’t updated the above to reflect that (and really would have preferred they hadn’t).

Moshirechiku – Female CB Gold
Accepted sometime before 22.04.2014.

Bound by affection as well as by necessity of magic to Kotanechiku, Moshirechiku – also known as ‘the Gold Demon’ – is fiercely protective over her soulmate. Separated, the two are wholly ordinary dragons, if that – but they’ve delved deep into symbiotic magic arts and discovered ways to excel at the craft as long as they have each other’s company. Chiefly stretching and constricting the flow of time, the true capabilities of the two dragons tend to go unnoticed – mistaken at one extreme for teleportation and as twin lives paused on the other. With their heartbeats long since synchronised, the two dragons are often seen together, slowing time for themselves to watch mountains melt, enjoying the beauty of the natural world that goes unseen by others for the timescales involved, little more than mere statues for passersby to ponder the purpose of.

Moshirechiku’s description is an homage to Lechku (Moshirechiku) from Okami. As the description itself already reveals, this really is a combined description with Kotanechiku. The two are considerably more pacifistic (and feminine) than their true demon counterparts in the game, but I’d still be unnerved if I had to deal with them.

Political Tarantula Hawks

Arachnocapitalist – Male CB Tarantula Hawk drake

In the spirit of needlessly playing with bits and pieces of one’s food, Arachnocapitalist occasionally arranges shed spider skin to act out shallow little dramas, to the degree limited drake cognition allows him to. Over the course of this play, he has developed strong opinions about the way that spider society is – or at least should be – organised, expressing his opinion that spider interaction should be governed by unbridled free markets.

  • Accept: God, how many are there? Really interesting none the less.

Presumably because you’re mistaking different political flavours for each other and thus not noticing the difference between the political spider drakes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In the spirit of needlessly playing with bits and pieces of one’s food, Arachnosyndicalist occasionally arranges shed spider skin to act out shallow little dramas, to the degree limited drake cognition allows him to. Over the course of this play, he has developed strong opinions about the way that spider society is – or at least should be – organised, expressing his opinion that spiders should cooperate with each other directly and form syndicates.

In the spirit of needlessly playing with bits and pieces of one’s food, Arachnomutualist occasionally arranges shed spider skin to act out shallow little dramas, to the degree limited drake cognition allows her to. Over the course of this play, she has developed strong opinions about the way that spider society is – or at least should be – organised, expressing her opinion that the only way for a spider to legitimately acquire insects is for the spider itself to hunt, and that it is deeply illegitimate for a spider to acquire insects as payment for the use of its nets by other spiders, or by attracting insects with its existing insect stash.

Over the course of this play, she has developed strong opinions about the way that spider society is – or at least should be – organised, expressing her opinion that while a spider is not entitled to claiming ownership of its web and must allow other spiders use of it as well, all insects acquired through dedicated hunt and stashed away undeniably belong to the spider that made the catch.

Miscellaneous

Terebinth Aru’ak – Male 2G Turpentine (Historic)
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

As the first publicly recorded turpentine bred of moonstone and turpentine parents, Terebinth Aru’ak dismisses his own historical significance, blind to it as the timing of his hatching has necessarily made him; after all, the two species have never had any greater trouble breeding than other turpentine pairings that he himself has been able to observe. The idea that something resembling a curse may once have prevented moonstones (and ridgewings) from bearing children with his kind is merely a source of amusement for Terebinth, as he has no trouble producing children with a moonstone mate, himself. Much to his delight, his offspring largely carry on this tradition, to his perception proving that the whispered stories still circulating are at best mythological, at worst misinformed.

  • Accept: I remember the Ridgewings, but the Moonstones, too? That escaped my notice… Nice way to work it in :) -H
  • Accept: Interesting. :) ~D

Terebinth Aru’ak really is the first recorded offspring from turpentine x moonstone parents, as can be seen in the Turpentine Breeding Results thread – and I am sick of no one caring about Terebinth’s lineage, so I wanted to at least give him a special description to commemorate the event.

(Tmppr) – Male CB Stone
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

Tmppr is a capricious dragon with a near-malevolent streak he himself frequently regrets. Mated primarily with the lady dRTTY, the mockery that his offspring often have to deal with (puns upon puns of how they have dirty tempered parents) attracts his ire. In an irrational attempt to make any who would be so respectless regret their words, he is known to frequently sabotage his own egg clutches by feeding them to vampires. The mortality rate necessarily resulting from his behaviour has only made his mood swings more intense and he’s known to cry for days over the cracked shells of those less fortunate… but the survivors are a sight to behold. As such, while his admiration for them is rarely reciprocated, he has long since convinced himself that this morbid tradition is worthwhile, and between the fatalities will argue as much as if with deep conviction.

  • Accept: Cool codes :) -H
  • Accept: disrespectful not respectless —-
  • Accept: Nice Description ~brair
  • Accept: Great! ~D

This was just something ‘funny’ I felt I should write. I have a slightly dark sense of humour – and there’s much truth to be had in that writ. I do certainly try to bite all offspring (Tmppr) gives me, unless, of course, someone cries “waaaait” before I do, or the code is too cool (like (1amAA)) to risk accidental death.

Mauncauld – Male 2G Purebred Swallowtail
Accepted sometime before 19.08.2013.

Mauncauld suffers the misfortune of having attracted the attention of Venomous Blood. The aggressive Neglected dragon has claimed him as the semblance of a companion, scratching his wings into useless tatters and keeping him captive. Mauncauld does not quite understand that he could easily escape and find a White dragon to heal his wounds, greatly overestimating both his captor’s cunning and strength, deeply terrified of him, subservient for lack of a better plan. It is Mauncauld, ironically, that Venomous Blood owes most of his measly strength to, kept at comparative health by the Swallowtail’s nurture.

  • Accept: Nice :) -H
  • Accept: Very interesting! ~D

Mauncauld has a description because he has the misfortune of being mentioned in the description of Venomous Blood, and I just wanted to expand on the wretched dynamic between them. That’s all.

Apeirogon Female Geode
Accepted sometime before 15.10.2013.

Apeirogon considers herself a philosopher of infinites. Much to the chagrin of her acquaintances, she’s quick to derail any discussion by seizing any tangent letting her indulge in her hobby. ‘If the universe is infinite, it cannot have existed for an infinite amount of time, lest there would be no darkness in the sky, for infinite stars would have had an infinite amount of time to shine down upon us,’ is amongst the things she can prattle on and on about.
Some friends engage such challenges, arguing there might conceivably be other reasons for such discrepancies. Those especially familiar with her frequently win these arguments, owing to that her obsession is a mere hobby for her, applied without scientific rigour, leaving her ill-equipped to defend finer points of her ideas.
What does delight her friends, however, are her intricate designs – she loves drawing imperfect but lovingly crafted fractals upon the scales of the willing in whatever colours she can find.

  • Accept: A Max – referencing descrip :D I think that’s his first -H

‘Apeirogon’ is a term that I’m extremely fond of – and I’m terribly fond of the mathematics (and philosophical implications) of infinites. It seemed prudent to combine the two, so one evening when my brain was looking for a desperate distraction, I wrote this description.

Rehchoortahn – Male CB White
Accepted sometime before 23.01.2014.

For Rehchoortahn, ‘meticulous attention to detail’ and ‘affection’ are concepts with enough overlap to be de-facto synonyms. He’ll readily acknowledge that they have a wholly different focus, but when asked what he might prefer others express toward each other, he’ll insist on his enamoured preference with former – an outlook with potentially sinister side-effects. While Rehchoortahn himself would never directly lay a finger on a fellow sapient creature, he’s nonetheless nearly indiscriminate as to which flavour of perfectionist he befriends, ardently donating his services as a healer to those of questionable predisposition.
His closest friends are Morgrim and her mate Neike Taika-Tessaro, to the point where the two dragons consider him their mate in turn – and since he does nothing to discourage this impression, they form a tightly bonded triad that he’s delighted to be a part of, given the unusual dynamic between them so strongly caters to his favourite ‘synonyms’.

  • Accept: Good job! ~D

Rehchoortahn is one of three descriptions being crafted for the February 2014 description contest. One of them, Morgrim is on my girlfriend’s scroll – she normally goes by ‘Morgrim’ on the internet, much as I tend to go as ‘Neike Taika-Tessaro’. Rehchoortahn is another romantic acquaintance of mine – regrettably, he doesn’t play Dragon Cave, but I did run this description past him. :)

Davifrir – Male CB gold wyvern
Accepted sometime before 23.01.2014.

Davifrir has turned his pacifism into a deontological worldview for social interaction, defining harm as anything done to another sapient creature or their belongings without their consent. Since express consent cannot reasonably be gotten for every action, implicit consent is a wholly acceptable substitute to him, assuming one is willing to accept to offer compensation if one misjudged. For him, rules of conduct are only valid if one has chosen to obey them, making him wary of self-proclaimed kings or queens – or indeed anyone who claims to be able to govern another, or that others cite as having unquestionable authority.
He’s Neike Taika-Tessaro’s mentor, infecting her with his gentle but assertive outlook, teaching her to be sceptical of all things… including voiced scepticism itself, which he finds is far too rarely contested. He champions ‘non-conformism to non-conformism’, lauding true individuality – as long as no one comes to harm, of course.

  • Reject: Skepticism and skepticism are spelled incorrectly. Begotten is one word. I don’t see a reason to use single quotations for nonconformism (which doens’t need to by hypenated), as it stands on its own.
  • Reject: Too many wordy phrases, in my opinion. -CL

Since ‘scepticism’ is a valid British spelling and ‘begotten’ means something different than ‘be gotten’, I had little reason to change this, but discussing the rejects on the forum made me realise that ‘be gotten’ is awkward for other reasons (though none of the reviewers on the forum complained <3). Since it turned out there was more space left for the description than I remembered at the time, I changed it to ‘be obtained’ – and in a fit of generosity, added a bit of text before the ‘non-conformism’ quasi-quote to make it more apparent why it’s in quotation marks.

Davifrir is a sort-of tribute to David Friedman whom I would indeed consider wholly inspirational to my life – I certainly would not be an anarcho-capitalist without him. A major difference in Davifrir and David is that David is actually utilitarian, not deontological. I find many (but not quite all) of David’s arguments compelling, but think he occasionally shoots himself in the foot – marginal value, for example, seems like it would dictate redistribution of wealth if one had a truly utilitarian approach. (I should probably ask him about that at some point, come to think of it.)

This description began as the start of Neike Taika-Tessaro’s description, before I realised it would make it way, way, way too long…

Neike Taika-Tessaro – Female CB gold wyvern
Accepted sometime before 23.01.2014.

As a protege of Davifrir, Neike Taika-Tessaro believes in the liberty of expression for all sapient creatures, passionately convinced that all oddities in behaviour are entirely valid as long as no harm is inflicted on the unwilling. Perhaps the relationship with Morgrim, one of her mates, once began its life as a stubborn proof of concept, to show that even the sadistically inclined are respectable members of society as long as their victims consent to their actions… but whatever knot she may once have tied herself into, she’s long since discovered Morgrim’s attention is a genuine expression of affection, more cautious than it appears. Any long-term damage she might be in unintended danger of is offset by the healing magic of her other mate, Rehchoortahn, devoted part of their sessions that he makes himself. She explains her delight at her ‘tortures’ to others as a gift: She’s exploring the brink of perception with her trusted mates, knowing any voiced objection would be honoured.

  • Reject: Both of your descriptions read like a college textbook. I recommend dumbing them down a little. I zoned out after the second sentence on both. Protege. Several grammatical errors as well.

I asked on the forum about the grammatical errors and ignored the rest since it’s an opinion. The forum description helpers didn’t find any grammar errors but helped me polish the aesthetics of the whole construct in some details, so I resubmitted:

Dragon selfie! Sort of. I certainly didn’t start loving Morgrim for experimental reasons and Reh has no healing powers and is quite sadistic (and masochistic) himself, but we take what we get, neh? ;)

I originally submitted it with ‘protégé’, but apparently Dragon Cave does not like UTF-8 and silently ate the two és, so I had to transliterate it. Sadness.

Neike Taika-Tessaro is one of three descriptions being crafted for the February 2014 description contest, along with Rehchoortahn on my scroll and Morgrim on my girlfriend’s scroll.

Tomas Nau – Male 2G Bleeding Moon
Accepted sometime before 22.04.2014.

Like many of his kin, Tomas Nau is fascinated by toxins beyond his own. Having grown up in an Arsani community, Tomas has often considered how he might use his talents to further their purposes, enamoured by the smooth way that their society functions. Unfortunately, he has none of their empathy – and he’s discovered precisely how to use various neurotoxins to subdue dragons and turn them into soulless tools, altering their neurochemistry so they take their joy out of one task, and one task alone. He considers his actions a glorious art, a delicate pruning of unnecessary thoughts, creating members of society that contribute far more efficiently than a normal dragon would.
Some part of him must be fully aware of his own malice, however – he only picks on wild strays, dragons that have lost their clan, twisting them into little more than zombies in the absence of lucid witnesses. It’s been a long time since anyone sane has seen him and returned to tell the tale.

  • Accept: That’s slightly disturbing. Well-written, but disturbing. Nice work.

Another homage to Zones of Thought by Vernor Vinge, A Deepness In The Sky in particular. Tomas Nau is the leader of the Emergents and he’s about as creepy as the above suggests. (Needless to say I love the character. I can’t not appreciate any character that makes my skin crawl for days on end!)

I originally gave this dragon the name because the combination of Bleeding Moon and Arsani dragon just seemed naturally Emergent to me – vicious, tampering with you biochemistry, but (regrettably) blessed with empathy. ;)

Crafted Stone – Ungendered frozen CB Nocturne
Accepted sometime before 22.04.2014.

Crafted Stone firmly believes that she’s a statue, carved by an artist with an eye for detail and granted life with a spell. Depending on her mood, the role of her creator splits into two figures. Sometimes the characters remain merged. In either case Crafted Stone is enthusiastic to share her hypotheticals, fleshing them out and hoping that one day, she might meet the one who made her.
The existence of other Nocturnes does not deter her from her beliefs. Certainly, they’re alive and always have been – in fact, she’s witnessed several of ‘her’ species hatch before – but that’s the genius of her own existence as far as she’s concerned. What clever ploy, to create a statue in the shape of a Nocturne hatchling, only to breathe life into it; no one would be able to tell the difference! The genius of it, she says, is that it hides in plain sight.
Her one point of ‘evidence’ in favour of her fantasies is that she doesn’t age; a spell afflicts her, certainly – but not the one she believes.

I started writing this description with ‘it’ as a pronoun, but noticed I couldn’t bear it, so I gave the character an arbitrary gender. The description itself was just a spur of the moment idea, based on the name that I’d given the hatchling.

Das allerbeste Passwort – Female frozen CB Ice
Accepted sometime before 22.04.2014.

Das allerbeste Passwort is completely convinced that she’s thought up the cleverest possible password. It’s such a good password that she can’t remember it now – and this trait has apparently and unfortunately locked her in her youthful state, given that she supposedly made sure it was woven into the spell that stopped her progression to maturity. She scoffs at those who would doubt her tale… which scroll-keeper in their right mind would freeze a caveborn Ice, after all! None, obviously; so her claim. She’ll mature any day now, she says – just as soon as she remembers that blasted password.

  • Accept:
  • Accept: Ahaha, silly dragon. XD ~D

I originally named Das allerbeste Passwort because of her code: DASPw. Even at the time, I threatened my friends with the promise that I’d write her a crazy description about how she had the best possible password all figured out and that was why she was frozen. I guess I’ve finally written it, just over a month later (28.02/01.03)!

Das allerbeste Passwort won the April 2014 Description Of The Month contest for the category Funniest!

Rambi – Male CB Harvest
Accepted sometime before 21.06.2015.

Rambi’s personality occasionally comes across as if someone threw together various contradicting adjectives and then stirred the resulting mess until the boundaries blurred incomprehensibly. The habit he’s famous for amongst those who know him is his stern, methodical hunting of others, wrestling them down mercilessly and almost exaggeratedly… simply to get a hug out of them. His affection is entirely matched by his brute strength – and every once in a while, he’ll crack someone’s ribs on accident or cause a nasty bruise, but never intentionally. He’s devastated each time he harms someone, but the notion of simply being a little gentler is entirely foreign to him.

When I picked up the code R4Mbi, I just knew I had to write a description of a dragon that was a walking contradiction… the sort of thing one might expect if one tried to combine Rambo and Bambi into the same person. It’s not my best description, but, either way, it makes me laugh; achievement unlocked! :D

It took me far too long to write a description for this dragon, unfortunately, given a huge lull in description accepting by the moderators in 2014, which sapped my desire to write any more. :( It was – finally – written on the 2nd of August.

Mummelratz – Female CB Nilia Pygmy
Accepted sometime before 21.06.2015.

This particular dragon creeps many of her acquaintances out. Somehow, this Nilia pygmy lost her shy instincts and instead focusses her curiosity on her fellow dragons. She’s constantly investigating dragon psychology – usually experimentally. She would never dream of physically harming someone, but she’s been known to mesmerise and hypnotise dragons for hours with arranged visual illusions. While such tricks might be impressive, thus far they’ve been unable to override instincts such as hunger or thirst – which is just as well, since Mummelratz would probably not be deterred by such collateral damage. She self-identifies as a ‘hacker’… though to others that usually just means ‘someone like Mummelratz’ and, by extension, ‘someone to avoid’. Being small, agile and boundlessly curious, Mummelratz commonly doesn’t even notice she’s being avoided – and with a pleasant personality, experimentation aside, no one she’s met so far has really had the heart to tell her to go away.

Am admittedly still unlikely to take questionable advice from people who cannot spell ‘ellipses’. ;) Apparently this person is rejecting a lot of descriptions with the same half-assed reason. Oh well. :)

This is another code dragon. When I picked up H4CKT, I had to write about hacking (tricky in a quasi-medieval setting!), and I had to make it a Mummelratz (Wildcard v4 NPC) homage.

(OFFoN) – Male 3G Brute
Accepted sometime before 21.06.2015.

Off-On is a dragon that keeps confusing sleeping habits. He’s not narcoleptic, nor an insomniac, but he’ll stay awake for days on end and then – quite abruptly – sleep like a log for an even longer timespan. His magical prowess experiences similar abrupt shifts; on some days, he can wield magic normally, and on others it’s entirely absent, as if he were attached by the hip to a Cassare. The times of switching are entirely periodic, however, and he’s learnt to arrange his life around them.

This is a dragon I nabbed for its code. It’s meant to be an homage to A Deepness In The Sky, where a star experiences lulls and flares in activity (called the On-Off star), but of course that’s probably not obvious, given that stars aren’t sapient creatures, whereas Off-On is.

Geleira – Female CB Glaucus Drake
Accepted sometime before 21.06.2015.

Geleira is a loyal companion to the gemshard hatchling Dasurmaak, a forgetful, chronically absent-minded dragoness. While Geleira can’t untangle the worst of her companion’s confusions, she does help by preventing actions from being needlessly repeated as long as it is in her power to do so; often, this involves moving items out of Dasurmaak’s reach quickly enough. What Geleira does not object to, unsurprisingly, is Dasurmaak forgetting just how much attention she’s been showered with – that, of course, can be repeated however frequently as the scatter-brained dragon wishes.

There’s nothing new here relative to the description of Dasurmaak, but I felt it was only respectful to at least acknowledge their bond in her description, in turn.

Subvocal – 2G Cavern Lurker
Accepted sometime before 21.06.2015.

Subvocal has no voice – not even a telepathic one. The people that know him aren’t sure whether he’s capable of speaking and just chooses not to, or if there’s something preventing him from vocalising what’s on his mind. He’s repeatedly demonstrated he can understand what others say, but he himself is completely mute. He’s encoded a lot of complexity into the subtleties of his body language, occasionally capable of having whole conversations in this way, but largely he relies on writing and a system of non-obvious gestures that he and his friends can understand as they would spoken words.

Back when I receive Subvocal from herk, I was delighted that I got the name Subvocal for him and I wanted to give him a description as a gesture of thanks to herk. It took half a year before I found the mental energy to (given the description backlog was in a dismal state when I got him and said state did not improve over time, I simply had no drive to write more descriptions). I didn’t come up with anything particularly exciting for him, I think, but I do like how it turned out.

(1NaU1) – Male CB Imperial Fleshcrowne
Accepted sometime before 21.06.2015.

The first of Tomas Nau’s successful experiments, this dragon is not lucid of his name – it doesn’t matter for him to act out his designated function, after all. With a stubborn focus, he tends to the gardens around his master’s lair, taking supreme happiness in fulfilling his tasks and neglecting everything else. Attempting to form social bonds with him is doomed to failure, were anyone to try. Somewhat dangerously, even convincing him to pause his work to eat is a tricky endeavour. Tomas is pleased by his experiment’s dedication to his work, of course, and uses him to demonstrate to others just how brilliant his plan is… as well as to prey on the weak-willed that simply wish to fit in and be happy, weaselling a questionable consent from them to craft them into one of his cherished minions.

I came across this code in the cave on accident and couldn’t resist picking it up, since it ties into Tomas Nau’s narrative so exceptionally well. Given the character’s near-literal mindlessness, this is more of a peripheral description of Tomas, of course, but I think it works.

That being said, it took me almost five months to write it, disheartened with the description backlog as I was, until my gemshard naming scheme snapped me out of it for long enough to catch up with my small to do list.

(thRyL) – Female CB Brimstone
Accepted sometime before 23.06.2015.

Thryl is a dragon with a tendency to dramatise and exaggerate everything. She’s something of a diva, warm-hearted but ultimately capricious. Given her species, her mood swings can be terrifying to behold, with even simple frustration often given others the impression that she might get violent – something that she considers herself far too cultured for to stoop to even in the midst of pure rage. When meeting new people, her catchphrase is: “Thrilled to meet you,” which, of course, is what netted her the name she proudly wears today.

This dragon’s nickname, Nate, relates to his formal name more than one might initially suspect. Nonetheless one should avoid talking to Nate about precisely how the two are related… unless one wants him to delve at length into the tripwires that English phonemes occasionally lay for the unwary.

Nate’s lineage is herk’s excellent Descripdoom lineage. I felt I owed the dragon both a name at least as ridiculous as those of its ancestors (“To two too”, “I’m an Alot”, “Now is better than then”)… and a silly little description.

But it got a moderator reject (that I noticed sometime in 2020); I had to remove ‘English’ from this description (seriously? I will never get Dragon Cave’s ridiculous policies e_e it doesn’t actually make any sense for any other language!); it was previously before the ‘phonemes’ word.
